E34 M5 w/ an S52 out of an E36 M3. Courtesy of our friends at DailyTurismo.
Honestly, this makes a little bit of sense. E34 Ms have a reputation for being... needy , and while this example will be down on power to an S38, it's wouldn't be a monumental task to get it back up around 300HP and it still looks and handles like an E34 M5.

I hate this. The S38 is awesome. And special. This engine is not.

yeah, this is weird. If it were just a regular 5 series I would think it was cool, but idk if I'd do this to an M...

Less power, flat seats...
If you can't afford the maintenance on a S38, buy a 535i. Case Closed.

exactly. why not get a cheap E34, do the swap, then upgrade suspension and brakes?

it would be cool if done to an E34 525i

That's what usually happens, and that is good. Keep it that way. What happened to that poor S38!/

That's tough to argue with.

I dunno! Hopefully it was installed in an E30!

Yep, and you'd probably have spent a lot less

If the engine was dead/on its last legs, this probably made more sense. Not many people out there are willing/able to pay twelve gazillion dollars to rebuild an S38. Now a good car gets to live on with a decent engine. I'm sure someone wasn't just like "nah I hate the S38 let's put the S52 out of my M3 I crashed last month." Definitely with you on the WTF about the seats...

I just went on Ebay to see if the seller was trying to say that a S52 > S38, but I realized that it was sold as a 525i with a S52. The M5 keyword was added to the title to generate traffic (and it did!) I'm surprised that dailyturismo didn't catch this.
Now a very clean S52 E34 with nice AC Schnitzer wheels and apron, that's something I approve of! (except the seats)

For real. those wheels are incredible.

Oh gawd I can't believe I didn't pick up on that talking about the seats...the steering wheel and tan dashboard are a dead giveaway

This looks the kind of swap I wanted to do to my E34 525i 5MT. Even with a Dinan chip, the M20 engine was a tad on the weak side (168HP stock, 182 chipped). An extra 58 HP (comparing to stock M3 engine) would have been a nice boost, with room for growth.
Ages ago I wanted to see a V12 and in E34, but I've learned the value of simplicity and light weight, especially when it comes to handling.
